Let The Wild Rumpus Start!

Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, etc.) and Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, etc.) collaborated to make this, which is an incredible event in itself. If this book is going to be made into a movie, it might as well be done like this. I really hope the movie is as good as this trailer makes it look. I think the adaptation seems pretty cool, especially the fact that it takes a closer look at why Max imakes mischief in the first place, and exactly what his journey to the land of the wild things means for him psychologically. Kind of a Pan's Labrynth sort of comment on escapism that I'm really interested in. It looks amazing as well, watch it in HD.

**First seen over at the boy Tu Phace's blog, and on The Full Clip as well.

BROTHER SMITH AND THE CONCERT ALI'S

God damn i cant wait for this show.

Brooklyn...Stand UP!

This song is one of the illest things I have heard in a very long time. Louis and Gabe, the bassist and keyboardist in my band, are in another new band that covered this song the other night and it was so tight...calling this a banger is an understatement. Youngblood Brass Band are an 11 piece from Wisconsin who make some pretty ridiculous shit. Writing a verse to go over this as we speak. Turn your speakers up, or get some good heaphones on, and press play.

Just Another Day In The Life

Substantial (of QN5 fame) just dropped this gem on his new EP. Pretty incredible song in my opinion...that beat is heavenly. Stan just never gets the love he deserves, although hopefully all the recent press he's been getting will change that. Hope you like it:

College student shot...for possession of marijuana

A college student at Grand Valley State University, Derek Copp was shot by a police officer for possessing marijuana. He was unarmed, and the story is still unclear as to why the officer fired his weapon. Derek is in the hospital, but students around the campus and the nation have begun to open their eyes to the devastating "War on Drugs."

Here's a short video describing what happened to Derek and how students are responding to it:

FREE KENNETH FOSTER

did you know that prisons are on the stock market these days! no wonder why he is still locked up...but wont let me out.

Kenneth Foster is 26 years old, and lives on death row in good ol' Texas. He made the mistake of not driving away from an argument, which lead to the eventual death of Mr. LaHood...I don't particularly wannt to go into to much detail about the case, but essentially, he is one of many sitting every day, forced to let the outside world pass by, stuck in the prison industrial complex. But what really struck me, and that made me think of you all, was the song that played... The Welfare Poets...

check out this song that plays when you load the website:

Hooverville 2009

Really interesting article in the New York Times about the tent cities that are becoming more and more common due to the current economy. The slideshow of the conditions these people are living is really pretty harrowing...even in the midst of such intense poverty, you can't help but be impressed by the ways people are able survive without a true home.

Read it here.

K'Naan

I recently discovered Somali-Canadian artist K'naan through his new album, Troubadour. This dude is making some really unique music, singing and rapping and blending the music of his native Somalia with really catchy yet conscious hip-hop. K'naan is actually really tight lyrically, but his distinctive musical sensibility is what sets him apart to me. I personally have not been able to get this track out of my head all day. If you like this song, you should get the album ASAP...even if you don't, you should get it anyway just for the Mos Def, Chali 2na and Damien Marley guest appearances.

Good Interview

Great interview from CrimethInc. Very informative and gave me a new perspective on 'anarchy' in general, specifically what an 'ex-workers' movement is. Think everyone would find it interesting.

Read This

This is a letter of resignation sent to Edward Liddy, chairman of AIG, from an executive vice-president of AIG's Financial Products division, at the center of the credit swap catastrophe. It was printed in the New York Times today. Very interesting, includes information that hadn't been released to the press and provides an important perspective on the entire issue. Well written and powerful. Read it, fucking relevant.

Darwin's Nightmare

Some time in the 1960's, in the heart of Africa, a new animal was introduced into Lake Victoria as a little scientific experiment. The Nile Perch, a voracious predator, extinguished almost the entire stock of the native fish species. However, the new fish multiplied so fast, that its white fillets are today exported all around the world. Huge hulking ex-Soviet cargo planes come daily to collect the latest catch in exchange for their southbound cargo… Kalashnikovs and ammunitions for the uncounted wars in the dark center of the continent.

This booming multinational industry of fish and weapons has created an ungodly globalized alliance on the shores of the world’s biggest tropical lake: an army of local fishermen, World bank agents, homeless children, African ministers, EU-commissioners, Tanzanian prostitutes and Russian pilots

Some of my favorite customs. The last one is a KTM RC8, stock superbike, but the picture is just to good.

Important Article

This is a really great article posted on Core77. The focus is how the current economic situation is affecting product design but the author has an almost historical approach. It's cool to read things we've lived through (and are living) analyzed then framed in some type of trend or context. Especially because he talks a lot about 'context' in the article! Some very interesting insights regarding capitalism and consumer culture. Definitely worth the read. Link below.

TrueBlue

bikes are life (empowering).

Today was the first day that I rode my bike to work, a 5.5 mile ride, both ways. I rode east on bonita and then south on garey, over the train tracks, into the city of Pomona. Im riding the red Torelli, la bicicletta che vince. It felt great to slow the traffic on the roads down a little bit, to a more human speed.... gosh, where the fuck is everyone rushing to? I biked like everyone else was driving, holding down my personal space.

"When humans invented the bicycle they reached the peak of their attainments. Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of humankind (unlike subsequent inventions for humankind's convenience) the more they used it, the fitter their bodies became. Here, for once, was a product of a persons brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others. Progress should have stopped when humans invented the bicycle."

...i swear riding today has nothing to do with having a broken car...

Ride on.

Spring Break 2009

what a fucking adventure.
sorry i didnt make it home, but keep reading.

Last Friday, the 13th, a group of 25 headed north, 6 hours, to Death Valley. It is the lowest, driest, and hottest location in North America. Our first destination was the Eureka Sand Dunes. These dunes, rising 600 feet from the desert valley floor, are some of the biggest in North America.
We spent two nights at the dunes. I woke up early one morning with my friend Ana before sunrise, and climbed up the dunes to say thank you to, and appreciate, the sun. We offered the sun tobacco in return for her rays, energy, and love.

This is the ground, because it is so dry:
From the dunes we drove another 6 hours to the Saline Valley Hot Springs. One day we will all sit in the nude, together, in hot springs, in the middle of the desert, with palm trees providing us shade, smoking a spliff. I met many unbelievable human beings.

I heard one story of a guy who was arrested, and while in the police station, he began to stand on one leg. The police asked him why he was standing on one leg, because they didnt like it. He said he was because he wanted to, and then asked if it was illegal. They kept on asking and pushing him. He successfully diverted the attention away from his crime to him standing on one foot, and he was actually let go.... so, if you are ever arrested, stand on one foot.

As we left the hot springs, the oil pan on the car cracked, and there was a huge oil spill. The car, without oil, couldnt start. So, the car was stuck 40 miles off of any paved road, in the middle of the desert. I got a ride to cell phone service in a town called Lone Pine, CA, and called AAA. Unfortunately, AAA sucks, and they wont tow when the car is off of paved road. However, they reffered me to a towing comapny...they quoted me $1600! Somehow, i found a local guy to do it for $600. Really lucky.

After a day of 12 hours of driving, we finally made it to this waterfall to set up camp for the night, at 3:30 in the morning. we made some pasta and drank some rum and fell asleep under the stars.

The next day, we headed up to Mamouth to go snowboarding. A friend has a condo literally right on the mountain which is so tight. We walked out of the door and boarder to the chair lift. tickets were $80. but we later found out that we could ride for free from 2:30-4 every day because they stop checking tickets. This mountain is huge, and most of it is aboce the tree line, so you can acutally snowboard anywhere you want....there are pretty much no trails. So tight... and i landed a nice 360.

After a few days of boarding and smoking and reading "Expect Resitance" by crimethinc., we headed back to lone pine to pick up the car.... i got cheated out of so much money and had to pay another $1015. so fucked.... later i found out from a VW dealer that it should have only been $495.

Then we stopped in Bishop, CA, and I got in touch with my artistic side, and took some pictures...Much love.

THEY SAY GENTRIFY...WE SAY OCCUPY

....gotta love the first posts...hope this works out.

Last Thursday morning, 3/19/09, homeless new yorkers took over a beautiful vacant two-story city owned building in East Harlem/El Barrio on the corner of Madison Avenue and 116th Street. The building had been empty for decades. The homelessness/housing crisis is out of hand and people are desperate. There is no escaping it. Tent cities are popping up all over the country...there is one in Ontario, CA, jut 15 minutes away from my school.

What are the options? When basic needs, such as housing, are not being met "legally" by politicians and the greater bureaucracy, they will be taken, by any means necessary...we will see squatting will become more and more common.

One neighborhood resident and community leader Gloria Quiñones says, “In my forty years of community activism on this issue, I have never seen things get so desperate. Families are doubled and tripled up while there are vacant city-owned properties and no plans to use them to house low-income folks. This is disgraceful! We know the Mayor is a great businessman and he's one of the richest people in the world, he can do much better than having poor people living on the streets.”

Booze and Tap Water

My boy Nate put me on to this group Cold Duck Complex, who actually are based out of Northampton I think. It's a keyboardist, a bassist, a drummer, and an MC who make some really live sounding hip-hop with a dark sound that I'm really feeling. The MC, despite bearing the unfortunate name of Platypus Complex, is really pretty tight. Hope yall dig this track:

Dessa Live on MPR

Really good quality video of Dessa (from Doomtree) performing on Minneapolis Public Radio, helped out by some members of her singing group, The Boy Sopranos. This woman is so fucking talented. The three girls sing a song completely a cappella, then Dessa reads an excerpt from her new book (Spiral Bound, cop that shit at Doomtree.net), and then performs a ridiculous new version of "Mineshaft." Too much talent for me to handle on this one. Peep:

(click play, and then the HQ button for better quality...it really adds a lot to this one)

Wet Paint

Hope it's okay if I post this. Pic from recent visit to cement factory. Had to put it up.

The Beginning

Gentlemen,

Welcome to our blog!! This is the spot we can share everything on our minds and educate, entertain, inspire, and engage one another. It'll be a great way for us to stay in touch. Post articles from your favorite websites, photos of your projects, crazy videos, new technologies, or blast us with thoughts from your cranium. Let's keep this interesting.
I started by setting up two RSS feeds. Take a look through the gadgets in the customize section because their are some sweet tools. I also posted all of my bookmarks to the links section, keep adding so we cover all our interests. Take some time to build this up, I eventually want to use it as my home page and have it updated daily. So, let the games begin. E-mail me if you have any questions.
