THEY SAY GENTRIFY...WE SAY OCCUPY

....gotta love the first posts...hope this works out.

Last Thursday morning, 3/19/09, homeless new yorkers took over a beautiful vacant two-story city owned building in East Harlem/El Barrio on the corner of Madison Avenue and 116th Street. The building had been empty for decades. The homelessness/housing crisis is out of hand and people are desperate. There is no escaping it. Tent cities are popping up all over the country...there is one in Ontario, CA, jut 15 minutes away from my school.

What are the options? When basic needs, such as housing, are not being met "legally" by politicians and the greater bureaucracy, they will be taken, by any means necessary...we will see squatting will become more and more common.

One neighborhood resident and community leader Gloria QuiƱones says, “In my forty years of community activism on this issue, I have never seen things get so desperate. Families are doubled and tripled up while there are vacant city-owned properties and no plans to use them to house low-income folks. This is disgraceful! We know the Mayor is a great businessman and he's one of the richest people in the world, he can do much better than having poor people living on the streets.”
