The Post-Dilla School, Vol. 1 (reposted from my feature @ The New Confusion)

Much has been written about the late great James Dewitt Yancey, better known to music fans as J Dilla. For many years, Dilla (formerly known as Jay Dee) was your favorite producer's favorite producer, working behind the scenes to craft the sounds of acts like A Tribe Called Quest, D'Angelo and Common. Dilla gained wider underground fame during his latter years, though he tragically died of rare blood disease TTP in 2006, continuing to produce beats from hospital bed until he was no longer physically able. Better late than never, Dilla's work was truly canonized after his death, and he has now become one of the most acclaimed and respected producers in hip-hop history. Originally taught how to use an MPC by Parliament Funkadelic drum-programmer Amp Fiddler, Dilla was known for his incredible attention to detail, his knack for flipping difficult samples, and his skill at programming drums without quantizing (electronically locking the drums into perfect time), bringing to prominence an off-kilter, more human sound that hadn't been heard in hip-hop drum loops.

Quite a bit of material has been written on J Dilla over the past few years, and much homage has been paid to his influence on hip-hop production. Though it is undeniable that Dilla's sound has influenced a variety of younger producers who have incorporated elements of his style into their own unique methods of beatmaking, it is rare that these producers are looked at in-depth and together as part of a certain beatmaking tradition. When it comes down to it, this post-Dilla school of producers seems to be creating some of the most fresh and innovative instrumentals in hip-hop right now. Here is the first installment of an attempt to bring some of these talented musicians to light, artists who are creating dynamic work in the tradition of one of the greatest and most intriguing producers in hip-hop history.

Waajeed

Waajeed is another Detroit-born producer who has recently been chopping up gems for artists like Finale, Invincible and his own group, Platinum Pied Pipers. Legend has it that Wajeed's first MPC was a model of J Dilla's that ?uestlove had somehow broken. Dilla apparently offered Waajeed the MPC, saying he could keep it if he could figure out how to fix it. Waajeed not only fixed it, but became extremely adept at using the thing, landing some of his beats on Slum Village's 2000 realease, Trinity (Past, Present, and Future) after Dilla left the group to pursue his solo career. Wajeed's style is undoubtedly rooted in the "Detroit boom-clack" sound that Dilla pioneered, though he has his own sound through which he filters this influence. Though his chopping of samples is sometimes slightly less off-kilter than what Dilla would have done, tracks like the one below, produced for Max Herre's self-titled album, exemplify his effective use of non-quantized, drunken drum loops of the Jay Dee ilk.

Waajeed - Epilog/Prolog (Purple Haze)

Exile

Though most know him from his work with rapper Blu on their critically acclaimed collaborative release Below the Heavens, Exile is a force in his own right. This man is a wizard on the pads, with a knack for live programming reminiscent of the stories of Dilla's own legendary ability to lay down bar after bar of non-quantized kicks and snares perfectly. Check some of his MPC work below:

Exile also has a knack for finding some of the sweetest, most obscure samples you've ever heard and flipping them to create powerful soundscapes. He brings out the best in every emcee he works with, whether it be the afformentioned Blu or up-and-comer Fashawn on his recent Exile-produced album Boy Meets World. Exile also released an album earlier this year called Radio, composed entirely of (you guessed it) beats made by sampling sounds from the radio. Check out a track from that below, complete with off-kilter chops galore:

Exile - The Sound Is God

14KT

The Dilla-infuenced producer who has come most recently to indie acclaim, 14KT hails from Ypsilanti, Michigan and takes definite direct influence from Dilla's sound, especially his complex soul-sampled opus, Donuts. One of the best and brightest of the Post-Dilla school, KT is extremely dextrous with soulful source material, interweaving lush loops and chops with interesting overdubs of vocal harmonies, beatboxing, and even snippets of answering machine messages. In addition, his dynamic drum work can snap from perfectly tight on one song to meticulously drunken on the next. His first LP, The Golden Hour, is undoubtedly one of the best instrumental hip-hop albums of the past year. Experience it for yourself below:

14 KT - Ypsilanti

The second installment is coming soon. Hollerate.

HESTER P IS PUBLIC AGAIN.

I realized that it was stupid for us to keep the blog private.. i edited the one comment that caused us to change the settings anyway.

Hester Pan1m is clearly for us to share our art, thoughts, and accomplishments, but why not be able to share them with the world too. I am not opposed to switching back but would like to hear some of your thoughts on the matter..

Love you guys.
Lets keep this alive!

On The One

sweatsinging
bodies coated in bitches brew
howling at the Perseids
with an opal on your tongue,
in the midnight hour
you wake to
handsnap soldiers
strummin in the vineyard
drunken meter
slang-bang
and a seeking
too bright to be overdubbed
lighting out for the new life
beyond the burning levee

horn-cased hobos hum
Guthry and wet their reeds
reeling in the woodline
the troop shines brassy
eyes glassy
screaming out

uh! huh! good god!

hobo from homeward bound
chant low and mill the dust in the stone yard sound
bring us home
bring the mothership home yall!
cornbread baked alone
in the shadow of the Catskills
you strike your own matches
and guild keys in the belly of a sloop

you throw the sun
across a backbeat
and yellow in the rusting glen
panting in pantomime
the dance and wine
remembered
hit it on the
one two three four
one two three four
one – you break for the clearing
and push

you lie prone on a stage at world’s end
cornrow conifers cooking in chicken grease
the sizzle shouting in the jam set:
obi nkyere abofra nyame
no one teaches a child God.

continued enviornmental plan, similar idea to the post on ecuador and oil

still seems like a pretty revolutionary idea, although still stuck in the narrow mindset of capitalism (including the idea of infinitely growing economies in a finite world) thus perpetuating the problem...as this is how we got into this environmental disaster in the first place.

Olympian Adventure

On Wednesday morning I woke up in Seattle.
Between cups of chocolate tea I breathed in the moist air.
Fresh baked bread and Kale salads from the garden.
I have been dabbling in the freedom of the Northwest.
Yesterday I canoed across the Puget Sound with a dog on my lap.
Today I pushed deep into the woods.
The trees covered in loose hanging moss swayed around me.
The taste of bitter mushrooms lingered on my tongue.
I saw something today.
Amidst vibrant green and several layers of awareness.
A glimpse of it all.
The penetrating electric world view that inspires every adventure.
Yes, today was a day was on one of those days.
I thought of you.

Recents

Thought I'd post a couple things I've been working on. Both for NFG Cycles, Niall the frame builder. First, is a head badge for his frames. First run, still need to polish out the machining passes and fix a few parts of the engraving. It'll get rolled and bolted to the headtube. Second are headtube reinforcers for the frames he's building Wills and I. OOOOOOOO shit!!!! Also, third, the dopest f-ing freak bike ever!!!! Just hosted Tour de Franzia and we built this bike as the race trophy. So much fun, built the whole thing in 2 days. It's three different frames we chopped and I welded together and then I built the custom fork. Then Clay plasma cut the fork sign. Rides so well, just cruisin. So ya there's some stuff I've been doing. Love the blog activity!! Awesome to see everyone active again, get a feel for where you're all at. Be well bretheren, take care, and keep it moving.

So The New Confusion (Mike Rosen's blog, which I am a contributor on) relaunched earlier this week with a new layout, including a logo designed by our very own Matt Kalish. Check out our new site HERE. We also exclusively released The Last Minutes new collection of songs, Wash, which is up for free download. Also, if you check out the "Liner Notes" document in the zip file, you can read a piece that I wrote about the album (which I'm actually pretty proud of). Czech it out.

New WordSmith Interview

I just got interviewed for this column called WesCeleb in the Wesleyan Argus, our school paper. Kind of funny considering that I've been reading that column since I was a freshman...makes me feel old. They didn't really edit the interview that well at all, and the girl who did it was a freshman who knew nothing about hip-hop and was typing instead of recording, but it came out pretty well I think considering.

Check it out HERE.

P.S. -- Read the comments at the bottom. Some family friends started a bit of hometown hilarity.

something else i wrote recently

here is something i was working on a few days ago exploring "the free life". im not sure how happy i am with it yet but thats what the blog is for write. i would love some criticisms and thoughts and ideas and anything that you feel so inspired to write. .... hope you enjoy...

I had read about them on the Internet months ago. They described themselves as “not subscribing to the ordinary life the system provides the rest of us; and rather, living the free life”, and that intrigued me. While it has been relatively easy for me in the past few years to begin questioning these sorts of things, and even stand behind these thoughts in my heart, I had not really stood behind them; I had not lived them, yet. And while the free life sounded attractive it was really quite difficult to fathom. And well, here I am, supposedly living the free life, with these people I met over the Internet in the forest in Sweden.

I have been traveling for the past month already, which is hard to believe in of itself. It has been great so far but hasn’t really satisfied that urge to find something different, something out there, something free; over the past month I have lived on friends couches, on strangers couches, on couches in anarchist collectives, and in a house in Spain who I met through an old friend, but none of it has had the feeling that I am looking for, what I think to be an unknown feeling. So now that I am living in the woods I have to ask myself once again, maybe this is the free life? Goodbye mom and dad, girlfriend, friends, school, everyone I know; my family is now Jan, Charlotte, Alexander, and Edward. I don’t know them very well, but they are the only people I know within the region. They are putting me up in an old run down trailer on their property, which they used to live in, as well as feeding me three meals a day, in trade for my every day work, helping to build their house. Is this the free life? Well, monetarily speaking it is a free life.

It is quite common within my group of friends to dumpster dive food. It is like riding a fixed gear bicycle or having a Mac instead of a PC computer, and while there are some practical reasons behind these interests, lets be honest, most of us do them because it is stylish. It is a fad that most of us will grow out of like playing with Yoyo’s or collecting Pogs. But my new family, they are freegans. The six year-old child is eating dumpstered food. The nine year-old child is eating dumpstered food. This is what they know, this is how they are raised. They believe in eating food that is thrown away in dumpsters behind stores that is still edible. As they tell me, they have found everything, from cheese to beer to meat. Maybe this is the free life? But let me just add this: not having the choice of what you eat from day to day, while it may be good on the wallet, doesn’t feel so free to my palate.

I took my first shower today. First observation: sulfur water. But I can deal with that. Aren’t Anarchists supposed to be able to go with the flow? And so I go with it. And I am showering and then bam, it hits…brrrrrr, it goes cold. I forgot, I learned this when I was doing my first chore of washing the last weeks worth of dirty, fly-infested, dishes, the water goes cold after five minutes. Perhaps it is to cut the costs, to make it free, the water heater turns off after 5 minutes. But let me tell you, those five minutes were heavenly. But if it were really the free life shouldn’t I have as much hot water as I damn want?

The children have not received any vaccinations. Clearly this was the parents decision, and not their own. I thought about making an argument that this wasn’t a free life for the children but in order to live a free life one must be able to fully think for oneself, and thus that argument becomes mute. And so I just wanted to include this fact because it is interesting and gives more of a perspective on the people I am living with.

And so all of this leads me to question, for myself, what does the free life mean? Clearly it is intrinsically going to be different for everyone, and maybe this is the free life for them, but for me I am not sure that it qualifies.

Surely parts of it do. Building my own house is part of my free life. Living outside of major cities is also part of what I envision for my free life. But having a limited amount of hot sulfur water doesn’t seem so appealing to me. There must be free ways around this without participating in the system. And for me, the way is through trade, just as they are feeding me and housing me in trade for my manual labor. And so that part of my time here in the woods is the free life.

Because highways only lead to hell

I have just come across this. free ride, insurance. It is really intriguing and I am imagining setting it up in LA...I'm dreaming I know, but it is a good one so ill keep sleeping on it.

This is how it works in Sweden:

No Room Service, Just Snacks And Shit...

My boy Jamaal posted about this on The New Confusion (formerly Are You Here To Confuse Me?) a couple days ago, and I clicked the link and literally laughed until I was crying. These two writer/comedians from L.A. are running quite possibly the funniest blog I have seen...maybe ever. The entire site is dedicated to wack rap lyrics, complete with interpretations that leave you rolling on the floor. These dudes are clever, and they make most of today's rap stars look like even bigger idiots than they actually are. Peep the link:

something i just wrote.

It was the first time I saw the police like that. Both hands busy, the left hand holding a leash restraining a dog ready to rip us to shreds, the right, with a black leather glove, holding a baton ready to beat and abuse. They stood in line, corralling us into the street. And I saw the fear in their eyes, and the understanding in their hearts. They wanted to be in the streets with us. They longed to join us, in our movement, The People’s Movement. Because low and behold, they are people too. And as beer cans and glass bottles were flung up into the air and cars on the street were rocked out of celebration and protest, I looked no further than the discreet smiles on their faces; because they too hoped for a new day.

popping the cherry

I just saw this and thought it was worth sharing. Also check out Climate Ride. with any luck i will be riding with a group of kids from Conn and my co-president who is making a documentary about the ride. hope every one is well across the world much love.

ps josh i cannot get those tracks out of my head

...

well i feel like a stranger on our own blog... thats a problem.

so i was just about to write jake an email and then the blog popped into my head and i figured i might as well post whatever i was going to write on here so all of you can know what is happening.

I left Newark airport on the 3rd and got into Stockholm bright and early the next morning. I got onto Arlanda Express train into the citycentre, which was an unbelievable experience in of itself. trees were literally flying by. the shit was so fast. on the train i met some journalist from the states and we talked for a while and then all of a sudden, 2o minutes later i was in STOCKHOLM!!! on the plane over i sat next to a married acouple, one of whom was from stockholm, so she gave me some advice on what to do for the few hours i had there. the highlight, besides the plessure of just walking around aimlessly, was the Ostermalms Saluhall indoor market and checking out some of the archetecture in the old city, although there is great archetecture everywhere.

and then back to the airport to pass out for a few hours before my next flight to paris to meet up with jonah and anjali. that went seamlessly. Paris is pretty cool, all though i havent explored that much yet. today we took a train out to Chantilly. which is a subburb of paris, about 20 min. north of the city. we walked around a bit, bought some bread and tomatoes, mozzarella, and avocado, and two bottles of wine and sat outside the chateau and feasted. i did some juggling too, which i have really been enjoying, and getting better at cough cough. we then got snuck back on the train into paris.

at this point, i am trying to figure out how i am getting up to copenhagen. i just emailed someone about hitchhiking from a website i found online. if they done get back to me i am gonna buy a bus ticket, thinking around the 16th or something. I have a place to stay from the 20th-27th in Malmo, across the water, in Sweden, about 45 minutes away from copenhagen.

I am gonna meet up with the bike shop people to see if we can work something out. also i have a wwoofing job set up for the beggining of september i believe.

all is well, and i will keep updates coming, when i have internet and feel inspired. and maybe post some pictures too.

hope all is well.

Cool Idea

Saw this on Core77. Really like the idea. Feel like you could do a lot with it. Not necessarily just graf. Could also layer multiple images to get more complex pieces. or really play with exposure time. also cool cause you dont need this product to do it. anyone with a camera and led can. be a lot of fun to experiment with. the device is cool though because of the charging function. it is commonly used in flashlights. there is actually a team here using that mechanism for a chlorine production device. Simple, reliable, relatively effective.

Josh, this started as a response...

are people still checking panim? i actually found a good internet connection. after i get back from the village this weekend im gonna post up some photos of people, places, projects etc. its easy to take good photos here. i find most everything interesting. ive also found my speech is starting to change. my statements are completely different cause there are so many language barriers. also while writing this i have a 500 ml bag of water hanging from my mouth. most common source of cleanish water (chlorine and plastics in it) = the water sachet. 40 of them cost 1 cedi ( about 80 cents). a big solid meal cost about $1.50-3 on average. and a standard beer is 700ml!! its a bit overwhelming. its like getting served a forty whenever you have drink. another interesting thing... i almost chopped my left pointer finger off. well chopped off is an exaggeration but it was the deepest cut ive ever had. saw the bone. just missed the tendon. at the knuckle closest to the palm. it sealed up really well without stitches but its still swollen and pissing me off. cant apply a lot of force. anyway ya. i should be asleep. technically sick though laying here i feel ok. been working too much cause my other primary team mate just got malaria and is out of commission. the rest of my group doesnt pull their weight. rather frustrating. anyways gotta wake up early. whats up with you guys? give a little update. havent really heard from anyone in a bit... love yall. take care, be well.

Hypnosis

My dad put me onto Hypnotic Brass Ensemble a little while ago after Sasha Frere-Jones (in my opinion one of the best current music journalists) wrote about them in The New Yorker. Except for the drummer, all of the guys in this band are brothers, all sons of Chicago jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran. Crazy, right? They've made their rep playing on the streets of NY and other cities, hustling and selling albums by hand, but they've also done some pretty high profile gigs, collaborated with people like Tony Allen and Mos Def, and in 2008 released an ill self-titled album. Here's a tight version of them playing their song, "War," on the Jools Holland show in England. And if you're interested, here's the afformentioned Sasha Frere-Jones article.

DAAMNNN THAT SUCKS.

Weird

Dudes, dudes, dudes. Everyone shimmy shamming I hope. So I had this dream last night I thought I'd share. Cant remember most of it but... We were all living outside in this crazy climate where it would rain then be mad hot and we were all running around wild as fuck having a great time. It was a lot of fun, then some official seeming people came and told us we had to leave for a trip. Then was the best part. Suddenly we were all flying in this cramped little plane having another little party. Every few minutes one of us would leave the group and go pilot it. It was tiny and rickety but we were moving like a jet fighter making crazy moves. After what felt like a couple hours we landed and I got out to see what we were flying in. It was an oldschool bicycle with a passenger compartment attached like a trailer. The pilot would sit outside the compartment on a seat like a normal bike and fucking gun it. There was a little propeller in the back and you would crank to keep it going. Th best part is it held 14 people. We all just piled out of this compartment the size of Smartcar. I got really excited and took tons of photos. My plan was to upload them to Hester P. I woke up this morning ready to post all the photos.... then realized I was dreaming. It was so much fun. So ya thats it. Stay well gentlemen, fly high, get dry, look in the mirror, and close one eye. What you see, is not a mystery, for it has taken time, to re-embody your history. Look at yourself, take care of your health, ask both what you are, and where you want to be.

Jeremy Fish on Art and T-Shirts

As I said in comment on the post below, I agree with Jeremy Fish's philosophy on the commercialization/domestication of art. Here are his thoughts on the matter:

The one part of this he doesn't really respond to is the idea of street art being "from the street" and the sort of idea that this makes it more "authentic" than art in a gallery or on a t-shirt. To me, though, that argument is stupid. Street art (or any art) can be both on the streets AND in galleries or on t-shirts...those are not mutually exclusive venues for art to be viewed in. They each have their merits and their drawbacks and do not directly contradict each other. Jeremy Fish is the bomb. Here's a link to another video of him painting a mural. And another where he paints in response to Aesop Rock's "Pigs."
