A few songs I've been enjoying lately:
This is one of my favorite Aretha songs...one that she wrote herself. You might recognize parts of it that Kanye sampled for "School Spirit" back on College Dropout. Vintage gospel/soul...no one can do what that woman could do vocally when she was in her prime.
Aretha Franklin - Spirit In The Dark
This is some new shit. No one knows too much about this dude Jai Paul from the UK, but this track has been in serious rotation lately. Really cool fusion of different influences from D'angelo-esque soul to electro to hip-hop.
Jai Paul - BTSU
Sabzi can flip any song and make it hot. Anyone who has heard "Fireflies" by Owl City will laugh at the fact that they sampled this, but the beat is tight, and Geologic holds it down.
Blue Scholars - Paul Valery
arrrretha hot dam. jai paul, very cool ill listen to that again. bluescholars, didnt do it for me like some of the other things they do. but im back to work, 2 essays due tomorrow and then no more work. u huh!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's not my favorite Blue Scholars song either, but I liked it as a free single they just put out for fun. I have 2 papers and one final left...then I'm chillin here for senior week and graduation, then one week at home before I move to BK for most of the summer.

ReplyDeleteLiving between Williamsburg and Bushwick off the Morgan Ave L stop...interning at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, which isn't really a cafe, it's actually a spoken word, theater, and music venue and an arts organization. I may end up doing some stuff for Wax Poetics as well...we'll see what happens with that. Matt, how long are you in Chile again?
