just curious what sort of mischief you all will be up to this break?
im heading out to arizona to lead a 15 person backpacking/hiking extravaganza, into the superstitions for 4 days and then up to sedona for 3...should be rad and pretty too. cant wait for friday to roll around. ill try to bring a camera and take some pictures. love, jesse. EPICness cause my names finese, breathing so hard all up in my chest, dont brush my teeth with crest, cause i use toms cause its au natural, pluraaal. whoa, im extremely tired. good night.

Old Friends Doing Good (retitled and reposted from The New Confusion)

Okay, so this feature is a sharp turn for The New Confusion, but they knew what they were getting themselves into when they made me a contributor. Although I realize that hip-hop will probably always be our main focus musically here at TNC, I think it's important that we focus on innovative music from all genres, especially artists and bands who find genre boundaries themselves completely permeable. This leads me to the Bay Area act known as Honeycomb.
Honeycomb are a quirky, but incredibly polished musical hybrid, an ensemble that pulls as much from hip-hop, jazz and classical traditions as they do from indie folk and pop. Front woman Emily Ritz lays the foundation of the band's sound with her ukelele, singing in one of the more unique styles around. Her vocal technique blends the old-school melodic sense of jazz and soul singers like Billie Holliday or Erykah Badu with more contemporary indie aesthetics, beautifully clear yet raspy and haunting.
The trio of Karin Dahl, Courtney Wachtel and Heather Normandale provide lustrous, often unconventional harmonies with multi-instrumentalist Kacey Johansing rounding out the vocal section with power and grace. Nathan Blaz and Joe Louis play cello and standup bass respectively, providing a depth of sound that give the band much of its sonic texture and Andrew Maguire, with his impressive vibraphone chops, adds ambient tones and melodies that complete the aural tapestry of this eight-piece.
The fact that Honeycomb has the same amount of members as the current lineup of The Wu-Tang Clan may seem a strange parallel to draw, but is actually significant considering the fact that Emily Ritz claims Ol' Dirty Bastard as her greatest musical influence. It's an influence you can actually hear on a track like "China Basin," which features a plodding ukelele-driven verse form that drops straight into a hip-hop breakdown in which Ritz's vocals are as much ODB (or perhaps even Left Eye from TLC) as they are CocoRosie. Most of all though, Emily praises Dirty's fearless drive to be himself artistically, and that is clearly what Honeycomb has done in their pursuit to make the music they want to make, regardless of anyone's preconceptions about genre and pre-established form. Songs like "Sparrow," played in the live video above, straddle the line between experimental folk and some sort of orchestral sonata, melding deep staccato strings with soulful, choral vocals that proclaim the coming of spring through imagery of birds taking flight. The culmination of much sonic experimentation, this ensemble has finally developed an innovative and cohesive sound that mirrors the finely patterned, yet dripping and dense quality of the honeycomb that Emily has been drawing in her visual art (or on any available surface) for years. With a strong buzz already in the Bay, Honeycomb is poised to make a mark in 2010.
The group released their debut EP at the Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco on February 26th, a collection that will be available on iTunes any day now. Check them out on MySpace for upcoming info on that, and if you like the video above, you can check out their whole entire set from their One Night Music session here.

ive been wanting to write a little something for a bit now, so here it goes.
ive been a busy bee. this past weekend i did a beekeeping workshop and got to put on the whole outfit and handle the bees and see how they work and create honey and what not. perhaps one day i will do it myself. bees are fucking cool. and they make yummy.
o, so there is this thing called bikeporn!!! check it out. it is sick. they are on tour right now, and they came by claremont for the day. we had a day of bike polo, naked bike rides, bike porn movies, and a naked party... jake you might want to get them to come out to hamphshire. i dont have any pictures, but whoaaaa, this is insane.
ummm ummmm, been doing some farming/gardening work, got myself a little plot of land down at the pomona college farm so that is nice. growing some kale, carrots, lavender, thyme, onion, garlic, and others. exciting. on a similar note, im working on a project right now to start a 5-acre farm in the city of pomona with the ohlone tribe, non-federally recognized tribe...working on grants and that sort of thing. pretty ok land except right near the 60 freeway.
classes are going well otherwise. taking west african dance which is supper great. also in an anatomy class that i really like. a farming class too. and two sociology classes.
also my living situation is pretty good. the coop is a cool place, community dinners, work party's, good people, etc. nice to bike to school everyday... makes for a healthy heart and strong legs.
so yea, all is well on this coast. COME HANG OUT.

Life
Update to my happenings. Things have been very interesting. To begin, I wrecked my car. Yes, you read that correctly. I totalled my car on Tuesday while driving in a snowstorm. The S4 is officially dead and I'm a dumbass. I'm also completely ok as were my two passengers, managed to straighten the car out so it didnt become a catastrophe. That would be a big happening in my life. Otherwise been doing the do, working in the shop, taking classes, and learning to enjoy life. Posted some photos below of some recent thingalangs. First up, MY FUCKING NFG!!!!! Custom fit and handmade by my man Niall Gengler. Check out nfgcycles.com. I do a good bit a metalwork for him and will be racing for his team next season along with Wills. Amigo makes some fine steel frames. We've been working on these paintjobs for about a week now with my friend Justin, Matt the guy you met over drinks along with Kamil. That is all spraypaint, I taped everything off. Hard to capture the colors with a camera cause the fades are so clean and the blue is impossible to see in these photos. But ya that is almost done and I'm dying to ride it. Second, a fun project I did today. Called a Turners Cube, supposed to be a test for a new machinist, I see them in professional machine shops sometimes. Decided to try one out. I'm pretty damn pleased for a first attempt. Also, they are usually 4 times as big, never seen one this small. Anyways so that is some of my life, give me a call if you want to talk, love to hear from any of yall. BE WELL Bretheren, I love all of you, stay safe.

News On My End
Friday, April 9th
For everyone in the US, keep that date open in your schedules if you're thinking you might wanna come to Wesleyan and see the return of WordSmith & The Concert G's. The band is in yet another lineup, a fusion of the Temps and the original lineup of the G's...my boys are back from studying abroad and are playing harder than ever. April 9th will probably be our biggest show of this semester. We are headlining Psi U, which will be dope as always, with a couple other good bands opening.
A bunch of new songs are in the works as we speak for the band, and the EP is nearing completion. Jared and I have spent the last week or so retracking and reworking some of the songs from the summer with better equipment and new ideas. Matt, you said you were thinking of changing the album art, get on that and send me some prototypes. Also, if any of you want to see some of what I've been up to, I recently got featured on this poetry podcast that my friend Davy has been doing for the online version of the Wesleyan Argus. Just got funding through the school to purchase and assemble this sweet sweet machine. Absolutely incredible how fast manufacturing technology is advancing. 5 years ago 3-d printer cost about $100,000. You are now looking at a $1000, open source, upgradeable, rapid prototyper that prints in ABS plastic. insane.
